HYMN: 491                   Love Divine                              Charles Wesley (1707-1788)

Love divine, all loves excelling,

Joy of heaven to earth come down!

Fix in us Thy humble dwelling,

All Thy faithful mercies crown.

Jesus, Thou art all compassion,

Pure unbounded love Thou art;

Visit us with Thy salvation,

Enter every trembling heart.

Come, Almighty to deliver,

Let us all Thy grace receive;

Suddenly return, and never,

Never more Thy temples leave.

Thee we would be always blessing,

Serve Thee as Thy hosts above,

Pray, and praise Thee without ceasing,

Glory in Thy perfect love.

Finish then Thy new creation,

Pure and spotless let us be;

Let us see Thy great salvation

Perfectly restored in Thee!

Changed from glory into glory,

Till in heaven we take our place;

Till we cast our crowns before Thee,

Lost in wonder, love and praise.

A time for reflection and confession:

Leader:        In baptism we died with Christ,

                   So that as Christ was raised from the dead,

                   We might walk in newness of life.

                   Let us receive new life in him

                   As we confess our sin in penitence and faith

c f Romans  6:4

All:              Like Mary at the empty tomb,

                   We fail to grasp the wonder of your presence.

Leader:        Lord, have mercy;

All:             Christ, have mercy.

All:              Like the disciples behind locked doors,

                   We are afraid to be seen as your followers.

Leader:        Lord, have mercy;

All:             Christ, have mercy.

All:              Like Thomas in the upper room,

                   We are slow to believe.

Leader:        Lord, have mercy;

All:             Christ, have mercy.

Leader:        May the God of love and power

                   Forgive you and free you from your sins,

                   Heal and strengthen you by his Spirit,

                   And raise you to new life in Christ our Lord.

                   Amen.

Collect Prayer:

                   Risen Christ,

                   By the lakeside you renewed your call to your disciples:

                   Help your church to obey your command

                   And draw the nations to the fire of your love,

                   To the glory of God the Father.

                   Amen.

Reading :             1 John 5: 9-13   © NRSV

If we receive human testimony, the testimony of God is greater; for this is the testimony of God that he has testified to his Son. 10 Those who believe in the Son of God have the testimony in their hearts. Those who do not believe in God[a] have made him a liar by not believing in the testimony that God has given concerning his Son. 11 And this is the testimony: God gave us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. 12 Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life.

Epilogue

13 I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, so that you may know that you have eternal life.

HYMN: 337        I, the Lord of Sea and Sky            ©Dan Schutte and New Dawn Music

  1. I, the Lord of sea and sky,

I have heard my people cry.

All who dwell in dark and sin

My hand will save.

I who made the stars of night,

I will make their darkness bright.

Who will bear my light to them?

Whom shall I send?

Here I am, Lord. Is it I, Lord?

I have heard you calling in the night.

I will go, Lord, if you lead me.

I will hold your people in my heart.

  1. I, the Lord of snow and rain,

I have born my people's pain.

I have wept for love of them.

They turn away.

I will break their hearts of stone,

Give them hearts for love alone.

I will speak my word to them.

Whom shall I send?

  1. I, the Lord of wind and flame,

I will tend the poor and lame.

I will set a feast for them.

My hand will save.

Finest bread I will provide

Till their hearts be satisfied.

I will give my life to them.

Whom shall I send?

Reading:     John 17: 6-19       ©NRSV

Jesus looked up to heaven and prayed:

‘I have made your name known to those whom you gave me from the world. They were yours, and you gave them to me, and they have kept your word. Now they know that everything you have given me is from you; for the words that you gave to me I have given to them, and they have received them and know in truth that I came from you; and they have believed that you sent me. I am asking on their behalf; I am not asking on behalf of the world, but on behalf of those whom you gave me, because they are yours. 10 All mine are yours, and yours are mine; and I have been glorified in them. 11 And now I am no longer in the world, but they are in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, protect them in your name that you have given me, so that they may be one, as we are one. 12 While I was with them, I protected them in your name that[a] you have given me. I guarded them, and not one of them was lost except the one destined to be lost, so that the scripture might be fulfilled. 13 But now I am coming to you, and I speak these things in the world so that they may have my joy made complete in themselves. 14 I have given them your word, and the world has hated them because they do not belong to the world, just as I do not belong to the world. 15 I am not asking you to take them out of the world, but I ask you to protect them from the evil one. 16 They do not belong to the world, just as I do not belong to the world. 17 Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth. 18 As you have sent me into the world, so I have sent them into the world. 19 And for their sakes I sanctify myself, so that they also may be sanctified in truth.

Sermon

Let us pray….

Affirmation of faith

All:             We believe in God above us,

                   Maker and sustainer of all life,

                   Of sun and moon,

                   Of male and female.

                   We believe in God beside us,

                   Jesus Christ, the Word made flesh,

                   Born of a woman, servant of the poor,

                   Tortured and nailed to a tree.

                   A man of sorrows, he died forsaken.

                   He descended into the earth

                   To the place of death.

                   On the third day he rose from the tomb.

                   He ascended into heaven

                   To be everywhere present,

                   And his kingdom will come on earth.

                   We believe in God within us,

                   The Holy Spirit of Pentecostal fire,

                   Life-giving breath of the church,

                   Spirit of healing and forgiveness,

                   Source of resurrection and of eternal life.

                   Amen.

Now let us pray together

INTERCESSIONS (end with Lord’s Prayer) led by

We say the Lord’s Prayer together

                   Our Father in heaven,

                   Hallowed be your name,

                   Your kingdom come,

                   Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven,

                   Give us today our daily bread,

                   Forgive us our sins,

                   As we forgive those who sin against us,

                   Save us in the time of trial

                   And deliver us from evil,

                   For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours,

                   Now and forever. Amen.

Ending:

Leader:        This is love, not that we loved God,

All:             but that he loved us and sent his son.

                   He is the sacrifice for our sins,

All:             that we might live through him.

                   If God loves us so much

All:             We ought to love one another.

                   If we love one another,

All:             God lives in us.

cf 1 John 4: 12

Blessing:

                   May Christ,

                   Who out of defeat brings new hope and a new future,

                   Fill you with his new life;

                   And the blessing of God almighty,

                   The Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit,

                   Be with you and remain with you always, Amen.

All:    We go into the world to walk in God’s light,

          To rejoice in God’s love and to reflect God’s glory. Amen.

Final hymn….

HYMN:      352 In Christ Alone                       Stuart Townend & Keith Getty © Thankyou Music

In Christ alone my hope is found,
He is my light, my strength, my song;
This Cornerstone, this solid Ground,
Firm through the fiercest drought and storm.
What heights of love, what depths of peace,
When fears are stilled, when strivings cease!
My Comforter, my All in All,
Here in the love of Christ I stand.

In Christ alone! - who took on flesh,
Fullness of God in helpless babe!
This gift of love and righteousness,
Scorned by the ones He came to save:
Till on that cross as Jesus died,
The wrath of God was satisfied –
For every sin on Him was laid;
Here in the death of Christ I live.

There in the ground His body lay,
Light of the world by darkness slain:
Then bursting forth in glorious Day
Up from the grave He rose again!
And as He stands in victory
Sin's curse has lost its grip on me,
For I am His and He is mine –
Bought with the precious blood of Christ.

No guilt in life, no fear in death,
This is the power of Christ in me;
From life's first cry to final breath,
Jesus commands my destiny.
No power of hell, no scheme of man,
Can ever pluck me from His hand;
Till He returns or calls me home,

Here in the power of Christ i'll stand!
