Sunday 15th  November 2020                                               Trinity 23

Leader:        Grace mercy and peace be with you

All:             and also with you.

Leader:        You have come to Mount Zion

                   And to the city of the Living God

                   The heavenly Jerusalem,

                   To the spirits of the righteous made perfect,

                   And to Jesus, the mediator of a new covenant.

                   Heb 12: of 22-24

Leader:        We come from scattered lives to meet with God.

                   Let us recognise his presence with us.

                   A moment of quiet as we call upon God and seek his presence

                   As God’s people we have gathered:

All:             let us worship him together.

Leader:        In the beginning

                   Before time, before people,

                   Before the world began,

ALL:          God was.

Leader:        Here and now

                   Among us, beside us,

                   Enlisting the people of earth

                   For the purposes of heaven,

ALL:          God is.

Leader:        in the future,

                   When we have turned to dust

                   And all we know has found its fulfilment,

ALL:          God will be.

Leader:        Not denying the world, but delighting in it,

                   Not condemning the world, but redeeming it,

                   Through Jesus Christ,

                   By the power of the Holy Spirit,

All:             God was, God is, God will be.

Leader:        Open our lips, O God,

All:             And our mouths shall proclaim your praise.

Leader:        The peace of the Lord be always with you

All:             And also with you.

A time for reflection and confession:

Leader:        The saints were faithful unto death

                   And now dwell in the heavenly kingdom forever

                   As we celebrate their joy,

                   Let us bring to the Lord our sins and weaknesses,

                   And ask for his mercy.

Leader:        O God of life, grant us your forgiveness

All:             For our careless thoughts,

                   For our thoughtless deeds

                   For our empty speech

                   And the words with which we wounded.

Leader:        O God of life, grant us your forgiveness,

All:             For our false desires,

                   And our hateful actions,

                   For our wastefulness

                   And for all we left untended.

Leader:        O loving Christ,

                   Hanged on a tree yet risen in the morning,

                   Scatter the sin from our souls

                   as the mist from the hills;

                   begin what we do,

                   inform what we say,

                   redeem who we are.

All:             In you we place our hope,

                   Our great hope, our living hope,

                   This day and evermore. Amen.

Collect Prayer:

                   Heavenly Lord,

                   You long for the world’s salvation:

                   Stir us from apathy

                   Restrain us from excess

                   And revive in us new hope

                   That all creation will one day be healed

                   In Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Reading :  Zeph 1: 7 & 12-18

 Be silent before the Lord God!
    For the day of the Lord is at hand;
the Lord has prepared a sacrifice,
    he has consecrated his guests.

12 At that time I will search Jerusalem with lamps,
    and I will punish the people
who rest complacently[d] on their dregs,
    those who say in their hearts,
‘The Lord will not do good,
    nor will he do harm.’
13 Their wealth shall be plundered,
    and their houses laid waste.
Though they build houses,
    they shall not inhabit them;
though they plant vineyards,
    they shall not drink wine from them.

The Great Day of the Lord

14 The great day of the Lord is near,
    near and hastening fast;
the sound of the day of the Lord is bitter,
    the warrior cries aloud there.
15 That day will be a day of wrath,
    a day of distress and anguish,
a day of ruin and devastation,
    a day of darkness and gloom,
a day of clouds and thick darkness,
16     a day of trumpet blast and battle cry
against the fortified cities
    and against the lofty battlements.

17 I will bring such distress upon people
    that they shall walk like the blind;
    because they have sinned against the Lord,
their blood shall be poured out like dust,
    and their flesh like dung.
18 Neither their silver nor their gold
    will be able to save them
    on the day of the Lord’s wrath;
in the fire of his passion
    the whole earth shall be consumed;
for a full, a terrible end
    he will make of all the inhabitants of the earth.

Affirmation of faith

Leader:        Let us affirm our faith in Jesus Christ the Son of God

All:             Though he was divine,

                   He did not cling to equality with God,

                   But made himself nothing.

                   Taking the form of a slave,

                   He was born in human likeness.

                   He humbled himself

                   And was obedient to death,

                   Even the death of the cross.

                   Therefore God has raised him on high,

                   And given him the name above every name:

                   That at the name of Jesus

                   Every knee should bow,

                   And every voice proclaim that Jesus Christ is                                    Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

                   Amen.                                                       cf Phil 2 : 6-11

Reading:    1 Thess 5: 1-11

Now concerning the times and the seasons, brothers and sisters, you do not need to have anything written to you. For you yourselves know very well that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night. When they say, ‘There is peace and security’, then sudden destruction will come upon them, as labour pains come upon a pregnant woman, and there will be no escape! But you, beloved, are not in darkness, for that day to surprise you like a thief; for you are all children of light and children of the day; we are not of the night or of darkness. So then, let us not fall asleep as others do, but let us keep awake and be sober; for those who sleep sleep at night, and those who are drunk get drunk at night. But since we belong to the day, let us be sober, and put on the breastplate of faith and love, and for a helmet the hope of salvation. For God has destined us not for wrath but for obtaining salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, 10 who died for us, so that whether we are awake or asleep we may live with him. 11 Therefore encourage one another and build up each other, as indeed you are doing.

Reflection from the Rectory

Now let us pray together

Time to Pray      (Prayers led by Paul and Pepita Walker)

We say the Lord’s Prayer together

                   Our Father in heaven,

                   Hallowed be your name,

                   Your kingdom come,

                   Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven,

                   Give us today our daily bread,

                   Forgive us our sins,

                   As we forgive those who sin against us,

                   Save us in the time of trial

                   And deliver us from evil,

                   For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours,

                   Now and forever. Amen.

Leader:        Lift up your heads, O gates;

                   Be lifted up, you everlasting doors;

                   And the King of glory shall come in.

                   “who is the King of glory?”

                   “The Lord, strong and mighty,

                   The Lord who is mighty in battle.”

                   Lift up your heads, O gates;

                   Be lifted up, you everlasting doors;

                   And the King of glory shall come in.

                   “Who is this King of glory?”

                   The Lord of hosts,

                   He is the King of glory.”

                   May God, Who has given you in the lives of the saints

                   Patterns of holy living and victorious dying,

                   Strengthen you to follow them in the way of holiness.

                   May God, who kindled the fire of his love in the hearts of the saints,                    pour upon you the riches of his grace.

                   May God, who calls you no longer strangers and aliens

                   But fellow-citizens with all the saints,

                   Bring you to your home in heaven,

                                                                                                                                                                cf Col1:12 Eph 1:17,18; 2:14

                   and the blessing of God almighty,

                   the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit,

                   be among you and remain with you always. All     Amen.

All:    We go into the world to walk in God’s light,

          To rejoice in God’s love and to reflect God’s glory. Amen.
