Sunday 7th February 2021                                           2nd before Lent

Leader:                  Grace mercy and peace be with you

All:                       and also with you.

Leader:                  We meet in the presence of God

All:                       Who knows our needs,

                             Who hears our cries,

                             Who feels our pain,

                             And heals our wounds.

Leader:                  All you who are thirsty,

This is the place for water.

                             All you who are hungry,

This is the place to be fed.

Why spend your earnings on what is not food?

Why pay for that which fails to satisfy?

                             Here, without money,

                             Here without price,

All may enjoy the bread of heaven.

                             God speaks,

And all who listen will have life.

Leader:                  Open our lips, O God,

All:                       And our mouths shall proclaim your praise.

Leader:                  The peace of the Lord be always with you

All:                       And also with you.

A time for reflection and confession:

Leader:        The sacrifice of God is a broken spirit;

A broken and contrite heart God will not despise.

Let us come to the Lord who is full of compassion,

And acknowledge our transgressions in penitence and faith.

c f Psalm51:17

All:             My God, for love of you

I desire to hate and forsake all sins

                   By which I have ever displeased you;

And I resolve by the help of your grace

                   To commit them no more;

And to avoid all opportunities for sin.

                   Help me to do this,

Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Leader:        May Almighty God,

Who sent his Son into the world to save sinners,

Bring you his pardon and peace, now and for ever.

Collect Prayer:

                   God of heaven,

You send the gospel to the ends of the earth

And your messengers to every nation:

Send your Holy Spirit to transform us

By the good news of everlasting life

                   In Jesus Christ our Lord.

Exodus 33: 17-23        © NRSV

17 The Lord said to Moses, ‘I will do the very thing that you have asked; for you have found favour in my sight, and I know you by name.’ 18 Moses said, ‘Show me your glory, I pray.’ 19 And he said, ‘I will make all my goodness pass before you, and will proclaim before you the name, “The Lord”; and I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will show mercy on whom I will show mercy. 20 But’, he said, ‘you cannot see my face; for no one shall see me and live.’ 21 And the Lord continued, ‘See, there is a place by me where you shall stand on the rock; 22 and while my glory passes by I will put you in a cleft of the rock, and I will cover you with my hand until I have passed by; 23 then I will take away my hand, and you shall see my back; but my face shall not be seen.’

PSALM 63: 1-8

1    O God, you are my God; eagerly I seek you;

my soul is athirst for you.

2    My flesh also faints for you,

as in a dry and thirsty land where there is no water.

3    So would I gaze upon you in your holy place,

that I might behold your power and your glory.

4    Your loving-kindness is better than life itself

and so my lips shall praise you.

5    I will bless you as long as I live

and lift up my hands in your name.

6    My soul shall be satisfied, as with marrow and fatness,

and my mouth shall praise you with joyful lips,

7    When I remember you upon my bed

and meditate on you in the watches of the night.

8    For you have been my helper

and under the shadow of your wings will I rejoice.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son

And to the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Reading:    Colossians 1: 15-23     © The Source

15 He is the exact image of the invisible God, the firstborn of creation, the eternal16 It was by Him that everything was created: the heavens, the earth, all things within and upon them, all things seen and unseen, thrones and dominions, spiritual powers and authorities. Every detail was crafted through His design, by His own hands, and for His purposes. 17 He has always been! It is His hand that holds everything together. 18 He is the head of this body, the church. He is the beginning, the first of those to be reborn from the dead, so that in every aspect, at every view, in everything—He is first. 19 God was pleased that all His fullness should forever dwell in the Son 20 who, as predetermined by God, bled peace into the world by His death on the cross as God’s means of reconciling to Himself the whole creation—all things in heaven and all things on earth.

21 You were once at odds with God, wicked in your ways and evil in your minds; 22 but now He has reconciled you in His body—in His flesh through His death—so that He can present you to God holy, blameless, and totally free of imperfection 23 as long as you stay planted in the faith. So don’t venture away from what you have heard and taken to heart: the living hope of the good news that has been announced to all creation under heaven and has captured me,

Reflection from the Rectory

Affirmation of faith

Leader:        Let us affirm our faith in Jesus Christ the Son of God

All:             Though he was divine,

He did not cling to equality with God,

                   But made himself nothing.

Taking the form of a slave,

He was born in human likeness.

                   He humbled himself

                   And was obedient to death,

Even the death of the cross.

Therefore God has raised him on high,

And given him the name above every name:

That at the name of Jesus

                   Every knee should bow,

And every voice proclaim that Jesus Christ is                                    Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

                   Amen.                                                       cf Phil 2 : 6-11

Now let us pray together

Time to Pray      (Prayers led by Colin Rank )

We say the Lord’s Prayer together

                   Our Father in heaven,

                   Hallowed be your name,

                   Your kingdom come,

Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven,

Give us today our daily bread,

                   Forgive us our sins,

As we forgive those who sin against us,

Save us in the time of trial

                   And deliver us from evil,

For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours,

                   Now and forever. Amen.

Leader:        From where we are to where you need us,

All:             Christ be beside us

From what we are to what you can make of us,

All:             Christ be before us.

                   From the mouthing of generalities

To making signs of your kingdom,

All:             Christ be beneath us.

Through the streets of this world

                   To the gates of heaven,

All:             Christ be above us.

                   Surround us with your presence,

                   Inspire us with your purpose,

                   Confirm us in your love.

All:             Amen.

                   May God the Father,

Who led the wise men by the shining of a star

To find the Christ, the Light from Light,

Lead you in your pilgrimage to find the Lord.

May God who has brought us out of darkness

Give us a place with the saints in light

In the kingdom of his Son.

May the light of the glorious gospel of Christ

Shine in your hearts and transform your lives,

                   To bring light to others.

and the blessing of God almighty,

the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit,

be among you and remain with you always. All     Amen.

All:    We go into the world to walk in God’s light,

To rejoice in God’s love and to reflect God’s glory. Amen.
