A time for reflection and confession:

Leader:        Hear the words of the angel to Joseph;

‘You shall call his name Jesus,

For he will save his people from their sins.’

Therefore let us seek the forgiveness of God

Through Jesus the saviour of the world.

cf Matthew 1:21

Leader:        Heavenly Father,

You have created a universe of light:

Forgive us when we return to darkness.

                   Lord, have mercy.

All:             Lord, have mercy.

Leader:        Lord Jesus,

You are the light of the world:

Cleanse and heal our blinded sight.

                   Christ, have mercy.

All:             Christ, have mercy.

Leader:        Holy Spirit,

You give us light in our hearts:

Renew us in faith and love.

                   Lord, have mercy.

All:             Lord, have mercy.

Leader:        Almighty God,

Who in Jesus Christ has given us

A kingdom that cannot be destroyed,

                   Forgive us our sins,

Open our eyes to God’s truth,

Strengthen us to do God’s will

And give us the joy of his Kingdom,

                   Through Jesus Christ our Lord.

                   Amen.

Collect Prayer:

God for whom we watch and wait,

You sent John the Baptist to prepare the way of your Son:

Give us courage to speak the truth,

                   To hunger for justice,

And to suffer the cause of right,

                   With Jesus Christ our Lord.

                   Amen.

Reading :   1 Thessalonians 5: 15-25                    © NRSV

15 See that none of you repays evil for evil, but always seek to do good to one another and to all. 16 Rejoice always, 17 pray without ceasing, 18 give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. 19 Do not quench the Spirit. 20 Do not despise the words of prophets,[a] 21 but test everything; hold fast to what is good; 22 abstain from every form of evil.

23 May the God of peace himself sanctify you entirely; and may your spirit and soul and body be kept sound[b] and blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. 24 The one who calls you is faithful, and he will do this.

25 Beloved,[c] pray for us.

Affirmation of faith

Leader:        Let us affirm our faith in Jesus Christ the Son of God

All:             Though he was divine,

He did not cling to equality with God,

                   But made himself nothing.

Taking the form of a slave,

He was born in human likeness.

                   He humbled himself

                   And was obedient to death,

Even the death of the cross.

Therefore God has raised him on high,

And given him the name above every name:

That at the name of Jesus

                   Every knee should bow,

And every voice proclaim that Jesus Christ is                                    Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

                   Amen.                                                       cf Phil 2 : 6-11

Leader:        The Lord is my light and salvation.

All:             The Lord is my light and my salvation.

Leader:        The Lord is the strength of my life,

All:             The Lord is my light and my salvation.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son

And to the Holy Spirit. Amen.

The Testimony of John the Baptist

19 This is the testimony given by John when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, ‘Who are you?’ 20 He confessed and did not deny it, but confessed, ‘I am not the Messiah.’[a] 21 And they asked him, ‘What then? Are you Elijah?’ He said, ‘I am not.’ ‘Are you the prophet?’ He answered, ‘No.’ 22 Then they said to him, ‘Who are you? Let us have an answer for those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?’ 23 He said,

‘I am the voice of one crying out in the wilderness,
“Make straight the way of the Lord”’,

as the prophet Isaiah said.

24 Now they had been sent from the Pharisees. 25 They asked him, ‘Why then are you baptizing if you are neither the Messiah, nor Elijah, nor the prophet?’ 26 John answered them, ‘I baptize with water. Among you stands one whom you do not know, 27 the one who is coming after me; I am not worthy to untie the thong of his sandal.’ 28 This took place in Bethany across the Jordan where John was baptizing.

Reflection from the Vicarage

 Now let us pray together

Time to Pray

The response we shall use is:

O God, keep us awake to you:
And alive to your call.

As we begin a new year in the life of the Church,
let us pray together to the God of our making.

Holy God, just as we are we come to you,
and ask for your kingdom to come in us and in this place;
increase our faith and our love for you,
so that we may become the lights in darkness
that we are called to be.

Silence

O God, keep us awake to you:
And alive to your call.

Holy God, the signs in our world
of hate, distrust and greed
are shown to us clearly every day.
May we see with your eyes
the signs of hope and victory;
the opportunities for loving service,
for encouragement, reassurance and thanksgiving.

Silence

O God, keep us awake to you:
And alive to your call.

Holy God, bless the parenting and befriending
in all our relationships,
and increase our love for one another.
Give us the humility
to accept guidance and warnings, lovingly given,
and the courage to uphold one another in the faith.

Silence

O God, keep us awake to you:
And alive to your call.

Holy God, we bring to you in love
those who are weary with ongoing pain and weakness,
those who are frail with age and all who are vulnerable;
Pour your living strength into their lives
and protect them from all that is harmful.

Silence

O God, keep us awake to you:
And alive to your call.

Holy God, we pray for all
who have come to the end of their earthly life,
and for those whose lives feel empty without them.
Give comfort to the bereaved,
and everlasting peace to all who rest in your love.

Silence

O God, keep us awake to you:
And alive to your call.

Holy God, your faithful care
has brought us safely to this moment;
we thank you for your constant love, forgiveness,
strength and protection.

Merciful Father

Accept these prayers
for the sake of your Son,
our Saviour Jesus Christ.

Amen

We say the Lord’s Prayer together

                   Our Father in heaven,

                   Hallowed be your name,

                   Your kingdom come,

Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven,

Give us today our daily bread,

                   Forgive us our sins,

As we forgive those who sin against us,

Save us in the time of trial

                   And deliver us from evil,

For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours,

                   Now and forever. Amen.

Ending:

Leader:        Father, we give you thanks and praise

Through Jesus Christ your son, our Lord.

Jesus is Lord of all creation.

All:             We worship and adore you.

Jesus made his home among us.

All:             We worship and adore you.

He was born of the Virgin Mary

All:             We worship and adore you.

He was cradled in a manger

All:             We worship and adore you.

He is God in human flesh

All:             We worship and adore you

                   with angels and archangels

and all the company of heaven.

Blessing:

                   May God the Father,

Who loved the world so much that he sent his only Son

To come among us in great humility,

Open your eyes to look for his coming again.

                   Amen.

                   May God the Son,

Give you grace to live in the light of his coming

                   as redeemer and judge.

                   Amen.

                   May God the Holy Spirit

                   Free you from sin,

                   And make you holy,

And bring you to eternal life.

                   Amen.

and the blessing of God almighty,

the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit,

be among you and remain with you always. All     Amen.

All:    We go into the world to walk in God’s light,

To rejoice in God’s love and to reflect God’s glory. Amen.
